The problem
Figures were compiled by hand from PDF bank statements. Treasury sweeps between accounts were counted as both income and spending, which overstated gross cash flow several times over.
Management needed one view of the group that could be shown to the bank.
What was built
A statement reader, a reconciliation check and one dashboard for the group.
- Statement parsing
- PDF bank statements read line by line into one ledger of transactions.
- Reconciliation
- Each statement’s opening balance plus its transactions must equal its closing balance. Any variance is shown, not smoothed over.
- Transfer pairing
- Money moved between the group’s own accounts is matched out and in, so a sweep is never counted as income or as spending.
- Dashboards and board view
- Daily snapshot, pipeline, margin by project and a year-on-year board pack, from the same reconciled data.
- Only defensible figures
- A figure that cannot be traced back to a statement line is hidden rather than shown.
The result
-
22,786
Transactions parsed from PDF bank statements
-
R0.00
Variance on every statement
-
800+
Internal transfers paired, so sweeps are not counted twice
And a dashboard that hides any figure it can’t defend.
